The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
